The Best Piece of Advice I’ve Ever Received

Nostalgia has a unique way of creeping into our hearts when we least expect it. Today, as I reflect on the writing prompt, “What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?”

I can’t help but remember my dear mother, a woman whose wisdom continues to guide me, long after she’s left this world. Her advice still echoes in my mind, providing me with strength and resilience.

It’s because of her that I have navigated through life’s highs and lows with a steady heart and open mind.

My mother’s most precious words to me were simple yet profound: “Keep moving on from any situation, whether painful or joyful. Once you get stuck in a particular situation, your life will also get stuck there.”

“These words, steeped in experience and care, have become my mantra for living a fulfilling life.

They are a constant reminder that life is ever-changing and that to truly live, we must keep flowing with its tides, never letting ourselves stagnate in moments of joy or despair.”

When my mother first shared this piece of advice with me, I was too young to fully grasp its meaning.

At that age, life seemed like a series of fixed moments — whether they were moments of happiness I wished to stretch forever or moments of sadness I couldn’t wait to escape.

But as the years passed, I began to understand that clinging to any single emotion, whether it’s joy or pain, can limit our ability to grow.

Painful experiences have their way of holding us down. We’ve all faced heartbreak, loss, and failure at some point. These moments can feel like quicksand, trapping us in a loop of sorrow and regret.

My mother’s wisdom taught me that while it’s important to acknowledge these emotions, it’s equally important to release them.

To keep moving on, as she advised, means to let go of what weighs us down, not because we deny its impact, but because we recognize that life has so much more in store for us.

On the other hand, even joy can have a trapping effect. We often find ourselves longing to preserve moments of happiness—replaying them in our minds, trying to recreate them in the present.

But in doing so, we miss out on new experiences and opportunities for growth. Life, as my mother saw it, is a journey, and no single destination, no matter how beautiful, should define the entirety of our path.

My mother had an adventurous spirit. She believed the world was vast enough for endless exploration and learning.

This is perhaps why she always emphasized the importance of continuous movement—physically, mentally, and emotionally. “The world is too big to stay stuck in one place,” she would say.

The beauty of this advice is that it extends to all aspects of life. When we’re faced with adversity, it reminds us to press on, knowing that the storm will pass and new horizons await.

When we’re enveloped in happiness, it encourages us to appreciate the moment but not to fear the inevitable changes that life brings.

Looking back, I realize that much of my personal and professional growth stems from this single piece of advice. When I was working in a banking job, a career I had not envisioned for myself, I struggled to find fulfillment.

The routine and monotony of it all made me feel trapped. But my mother’s words echoed in my mind: “Keep moving on.” Instead of resigning myself to dissatisfaction, I embraced the changes that retirement brought.

I discovered my passion for writing, painting, and storytelling—activities that filled my days with purpose and joy. I moved forward, and in doing so, I found myself in a whole new chapter of life.

Similarly, during times of personal hardship, her advice has been my beacon of hope. I’ve faced challenges that seemed insurmountable—losses that shook me to my core.

Yet, each time, her wisdom reminded me that the pain would not define my journey. By continuing to move, I’ve found healing, strength, and the ability to help others who may be facing similar struggles.

Life is a series of fleeting moments — some bring us joy, others pain — but the key to living fully lies in our ability to keep moving through them all.

We can’t freeze time, nor can we dwell in it. By embracing change and moving forward, we allow ourselves to evolve, to learn, and to experience the endless possibilities that life offers.

My mother’s advice wasn’t just about surviving life’s challenges; it was about thriving in them.

Today, as I write this, I am grateful for her wisdom, for it has shaped the person I am today. If there’s one piece of advice I can pass on to others, it would be this: No matter where you are in life, keep moving on. Life’s beauty is in its endless journey, not in any single destination.

  10. It’s obvious by the memories you shared that your mother was a very wise woman. I really liked the lesson that you’re sharing with us in this post. Especially the part about the world being too big to settle in one spot.

I tend to find myself in various types of ruts. I think going forward I will try to take your mother’s advice and be a little more fluid when it comes to living. Going with the flow is a saying in the US. I think it’s also a mindset/lifestyle.

Thank you for sharing such wonderful thoughts with us. As always, I look forward to seeing your future posts.
