Vrindavan: Where the Divine Playground Comes Alive
My dear friend,
I am currently staying in Delhi for a fortnight, but the city’s sun has been scorching and relentless. Due to this, I have been confined indoors for several days.
However, yesterday’s sudden downpour brought much-needed relief. It was the perfect sign for an outing, and my son, with his usual infectious enthusiasm, suggested that we visit Vrindavan.
With excitement bubbling in our hearts, we quickly packed our bags and hit the road for this fabled land. After a two-hour drive by car, we arrived at Vrindavan, a place that goes beyond the ordinary. The atmosphere here is filled with stories of Krishna’s playful pranks and his divine love for Radha.
Vrindavan is located on the sacred banks of the Yamuna River and is a beautiful blend of vibrant temples, ancient forests, and the echoes of an ageless love story.

Stepping into the Playground of the Gods
“The moment I stepped out of the car in Vrindavan, I was greeted by a loud and chaotic atmosphere. The sounds of temple bells and the rhythmic chants of devotees filled the air.
The town’s narrow lanes were lined with colorful shops selling flowers, incense, and other religious items. The sweet scent of jasmine and sandalwood permeated the air, serving as a constant reminder of the offerings made to the deities.”

A Glimpse of Divinity: The Banke Bihari Temple
It was 10 o’clock when my pilgrimage to Vrindavan began at the iconic Banke Bihari Temple. The sight left me awestruck – the intricately carved facade and the throngs of devotees waiting patiently for a glimpse of the self-manifested idol of Krishna.
The unique tradition of ‘darshan’ (holy viewing), where a silken curtain unveils the deity for a fleeting moment, only heightened the mystical aura. Here, amidst the crowd, an air of coolness and spirituality permeated everyone’s face.
As we joined the throngs of devotees moving towards the idols of Radha-Krishna, we too became immersed in the fervor of the moment.
Chanting and filled with excitement, we felt our daily worries melt away, replaced by a sense of peace and a feeling of being part of something divine. It was a unique experience that we hadn’t had in a long time.

Nidhivan’s Enticing Mysteries
Next, we ventured to Nidhivan, a sacred grove shrouded in legend. As a follower of Krishna and Radha, Nidhivan held a special place in my heart. This “Forest of Tulsi” is believed to be where the divine lovers, Krishna and Radha, perform their celestial dance – the Raas Leela – every night.
“We were surprised to notice the twisted Tulsi trees, all growing in pairs, covering the ground. Our guide explained the folklore behind them – these trees are believed to be the Gopies themselves, who come alive at night to join the divine dance with Lord Sri Krishna.
Yes, Nidhivan is a treasure trove of captivating stories. Here are some of the fascinating beliefs surrounding this mystical place:

- The Nightly Raas Leela: It is said that every night, Krishna and Radha descend upon Nidhivan to perform the Raas Leela, a dance symbolizing divine love.
- The Transformation of Trees: The Tulsi trees are believed to transform into the Gopis, Krishna’s devoted companions, during the Raas Leela.
- The Celestial Bedchamber: Every evening, after sundown, a bed is laid out for Krishna and Radha, along with offerings of food, water, ornaments, and neem twigs. The next morning, these items appear to have been used, adding to the mystery.
- A Forbidden Night: No one is allowed to stay in Nidhivan after sunset, for it is believed that witnessing the Raas Leela can have dire consequences.

A Tranquil Interlude
Friends, Nidhivan is a small haven of tranquility amidst the bustling town. While not a vast forest, the Tulsi trees create a verdant space enclosed within its boundaries. Several small temples and designated religious spots dot the area.
We observed a steady stream of visitors throughout the day, but all departing by 7:00 PM as tradition dictates. The gates are then locked for the night, and it is said that no living being remains within – not even birds or monkeys. Yet, the following morning, the disarrayed bed and seemingly used offerings reignite the aura of mystery.
Leaving Nidhivan with a sense of wonder, we continued our adventure in Vrindavan, forever captivated by the stories and legends that continue to breathe life into this divine playground.
