# Navigating the Digital Jungle ?

A Personal Odyssey of Screen Time Mastery

In today’s fast-paced world of technology and social media, things change so quickly that it can be hard to keep up. Sometimes we get caught up in a world of fake information and spend too much time online without even realizing it.

The consequences can be dire, as we risk losing our ability to discern, regulate, and remain self-directed, ultimately finding ourselves trapped in the echo chambers of a mesmerized horror.

INTERNET use at Home soars to more than 17 hours per week

This epidemic manifests in a society filled with isolated, anxious, and disconnected individuals. Even at the age of 64, I discovered I was not immune to the allure of online entertainment and social media.

Realizing that my technology habits were distancing me from the substance of life, I decided to confront this issue head-on.

Observing the prevalence of screen usage across all age groups, from children to senior citizens, prompted me to reevaluate my assumptions about outgrowing screen dependence with age.

Navigating the Digital Jungle

Despite anticipating that life’s realities would naturally lead me away from excessive screen use, I found myself spending hours online, trapped in a well-established habit.

As I dug deeper into this problem, it became evident that breaking this habit was not only about changing well-established patterns but also about learning to live without a crucial coping mechanism embedded in my everyday life.

I turned to screens during moments of stress, emotional turmoil, boredom, and even each time I sat down to eat, using them to fill the void and escape.

Between Netflix binges, YouTube videos, Instagram scrolling, and general online browsing, I wasted over 25 hours a week. I felt a loss of control, trapped in a cycle of self-deprecation and self-destruction. The frustration of being unable to stop this cycle birthed a deep sense of shame, perpetuating the cycle as a means of soothing discomfort.

Recognizing the cycle, I asked myself: How do I break it? How do I deal with something so personal, ingrained, and accepted by society? It wasn’t just about quitting a habit, but also about living without a crutch I had become dependent on.

Acknowledging the need for change, I realized that the first step was to understand the depth of my screen time habits. How much time was I spending on screens daily and weekly? What constituted a healthy amount of screen time, and how could I develop a healthier relationship with screens?

In the journey to manage screen time effectively, I discovered the following strategies:
