#Unjust Treatment of Senior Citizens

Unveiling the Unjust Treatment of Senior Citizens: Advocating for Change

In a country that prides itself on its rich cultural heritage and values, it is disheartening to witness the hardships faced by our senior citizens. As they enter their golden years, they find themselves deprived of the privileges they once enjoyed.

From denied health insurance and restricted loans to the unattainability of a simple driving license, our elderly are unjustly curtailed of their rights.

As a senior citizen myself, it is my duty to express our concerns and shed light on the question: Is it a crime to be a senior citizen?

Friends, I would like to advocate for change and emphasize the need for a compassionate society that respects and uplifts its elderly population.

This is a survey that stated that 35% of elders suffered abuse at the hands of their sons and 21% reported abuse by their daughters-in-law. About 2% of elders were abused by their house help, who is not a family member.

The abuse reported ranged from ‘disrespect’ and ‘verbal abuse’ to ‘neglect’ and ‘physical violence’.

Denied Health Security

Advancing to the age of 70 should be a time of celebration, where the wisdom and experience gained throughout life are treasured.

However, our senior citizens are met with disappointment as they are denied access to affordable health insurance. This denial leaves them vulnerable to exorbitant medical expenses, pushing them into a state of financial uncertainty and despair.

Burdened by Financial Dependence

After dedicating their lives to work and contributing to the progress of our nation, our senior citizens face the harsh reality of financial dependence. Discriminated due to their age, they are denied employment opportunities and left without a means to sustain themselves.

Their valuable skills and expertise, developed over decades, are disregarded, and their once-fulfilling careers fade into distant memories. Is it fair to deny them the chance to continue contributing to society?

Stripped of Independence

The inability to obtain a driving license further strips our senior citizens of their independence. Deprived of the freedom to travel and navigate their surroundings, they are forced to rely on others for their basic needs.

For individuals who have spent their lives being self-reliant and contributing to the growth of their families and communities, this loss of control is deeply disheartening. Why should they be denied the joy of exploration and the ability to remain in charge of their own lives?

The Unseen Tax Burden

Despite dutifully shouldering their responsibilities throughout their working years, our senior citizens continue to face the burden of taxes even in their golden years.

Despite limited resources and struggles to make ends meet, they are expected to fulfill their tax obligations to the government. Is this the reward they deserve for a lifetime of dedication and service?

Advocating for Change

The time has come for society to reassess its treatment of senior citizens. Let us strive for a society that values and respects our elderly population. We must advocate for policies that ensure accessible healthcare, financial security, and employment opportunities regardless of age.

Driving license regulations should be reformed to consider individuals’ capabilities rather than imposing blanket restrictions.

Above all, we must recognize and honor the immense contributions our senior citizens have made to society, granting them the dignity and support they have earned.

Friends,  The struggles faced by our senior citizens should stir us to action. We must challenge the societal norms that restrict their access to essential services and opportunities.

It is our collective responsibility to create a compassionate society that values and cherishes our elderly population.

Let us unite our voices to advocate for change and ensure that being a senior citizen is not a crime but a phase of life that is respected and celebrated.

Our senior citizens deserve the utmost care, support, and dignity as they continue to enrich our society.

  1. I can understand some controls may be required to assess risk … is someone fit to drive for example. That can, however, be assessed. There shouldn’t be blanket policies that once you reach a particular age, you should be discriminated against. Also, I know how much effort you put into keeping fit and healthy – you are probably fitter than many younger people.

As for abuse, that should not be tolerated at any age and if it goes unchecked, that says so much about the societies we live in, and therefore society needs to wake up and challenge such abuses in the home or elsewhere.

    • You are very correct, No blanket permission for a driving license should be allowed for the elderly,
but it should be with certain limitations.
and I agree with you about elderly abuse, that should not be tolerated at any age and
awareness should be spread in this regard.
And again thank you so much for your appreciation.💕
