There are times in life when we pause in the midst of a storm—not to escape or to fight, but to simply be.
This sketch shows a solitary figure under an umbrella, standing firm as rain falls around her. It represents resilience, the strength to wait, and the emotions we keep hidden from the world.
The poem “Under the Umbrella”, expresses that stillness and strength, turning a simple scene into a reflection on courage, solitude, and hope.
“Under the Umbrella”
Beneath the hush of a heavy sky,
She sits where the raindrops dare to cry,
A bench, a shadow, and a world apart,
Yet storms can’t pierce her guarded heart.
The umbrella blooms like a fragile dome,
A shelter she’s made, nowhere feels home,
The rain hums softly, a mournful tune,
Echoing secrets the clouds have shown.
Is she waiting for someone to appear?
Or hiding her sorrow so none come near?
The world may pass and never see,
The quiet wars are fought silently.
Under that canopy, she holds her place,
Raindrops tracing her hidden grace,
And though the sky may weep and roar,
She’s braver than all the storms before.

Thank you so much for your kind words. 🌧️✨
This piece was meant to capture that quiet, unwavering strength we often carry through life’s storms.
The sketch speaks in silence, while the verse tries to give that silence a voice—one of resilience, patience, and grace.
I’m so glad it resonated with you, because that’s the true magic of art: when what’s in the heart of the creator finds a home in the heart of the viewer.

I have not figured out the craft of sketching a black background
Well done

Thank you! 🙏
A black background can be tricky at first—it’s almost like working in reverse, letting the light emerge from the darkness instead of shading it in.
Once you get the hang of building highlights and mid-tones on top of that deep base, it becomes such a rewarding way to make subjects stand out. I’m sure with a little experimenting, you’ll master it beautifully.
