Daily writing prompt
What do you think gets better with age?

Dear friends,

I hope this blog finds you in a cheerful mood, much like the sun breaking through a curtain of morning clouds.

Today’s writing prompt is a thought-provoking one:
“What do you think gets better with age?”

It’s a question that resonates deeply with me, especially as I find myself gently sailing into what many call the Golden Years.

And let me tell you, there is something quite poetic about this chapter of life — a period where time no longer races, but strolls with you hand-in-hand, whispering stories of wisdom, grace, and calm.

So, let’s pour a cup of tea (green, mint, or rooibos — take your pick!), sit back, and reflect on what truly gets better with age.

Let’s begin with the most obvious treasure that ripens with age — wisdom. This isn’t the kind of knowledge you pick up in school or from Google. No, this is the hard-earned insight forged through experience, trial and error, heartbreaks, and celebrations.

In youth, we chase answers. In age, we understand the questions. We realize that life is not about finding the perfect formula, but about embracing imperfection with grace.

I’ve learned to listen more, react less, and choose silence when it speaks louder than words.

When we are young, a small failure feels like the end of the world. But with age comes a magical shift — a broader perspective.

We begin to see life not as a sprint, but as a long-distance marathon filled with scenic detours, surprising turns, and quiet resting points.

At 25, I feared uncertainty. At 65, I welcome it as the birthplace of growth. This shift in mindset is a precious gift age bestows, allowing us to worry less and trust more in the unfolding of our journey.

Another gem that glows brighter with age is emotional maturity. I now understand that not every battle needs to be fought, not every opinion needs to be shared, and not every emotion needs to be acted upon.

There’s a serenity in knowing you don’t have to prove anything to anyone — not even to yourself.

Forgiveness, patience, empathy — these aren’t just virtues; they’re superpowers that become more accessible with the passing years.

I’ve learned to accept others as they are, and more importantly, to accept myself.

As we age, our relationships evolve. We may have fewer people around us, but the connections we maintain are far deeper.

The noise of superficial ties fades, and what remains are soulful bonds — with a spouse, a lifelong friend, a grandchild, or even with oneself.

I find immense joy in slow dances with my beloved, in bedtime stories for my granddaughter, and in tea-sipping conversations with old friends.

These moments, filled with love and laughter, are the real wealth that comes with age.

Some say creativity is the domain of youth. I beg to differ. Retirement has brought with it an unexpected explosion of creativity.

I paint, I write, I compose heartfelt verses. I create not to impress, but to express. This freedom to follow my artistic urges is a delightful gift age has granted me.

It’s as if, with each wrinkle, a new brushstroke appears on the canvas of life, painting deeper colors and richer textures.

Perhaps the most beautiful thing that gets better with age is self-acceptance. We stop trying to fit into society’s ever-changing molds.

We begin to appreciate our scars, our quirks, and our stories. We understand that our value lies not in perfection, but in authenticity.

These days, I find joy in simply being me — a writer, a painter, a dancer in the rain, a silent observer of the stars. I am not chasing a version of myself. I have finally arrived.

So, what gets better with age?
Almost everything that truly matters: peace, presence, understanding, and gratitude.
Aging is not a decline — it’s an ascension into deeper living.

My friends, the best wines are aged. The most beautiful trees are the oldest. And the kindest souls have weathered many seasons.

If you are walking into your golden years — embrace it. This is not the twilight. It is the golden sunrise of a life fully lived.

With warmth and wisdom,
Vijay Verma

One of the true gifts of aging is the ability to share our life experiences — not as instructions, but as gentle guidance.
