# Essential Self-Care Practices for Daily Wellness

Daily writing prompt
How do you practice self-care?

Hello dear friends,
I hope this blog finds you in a cheerful mood.

Today’s writing prompt caught my attention instantly—“How do you practice self-care?”—a question that may appear simple on the surface, yet holds deep significance in our lives, especially in today’s fast-paced, hyperconnected world.

Self-care, to me, is not an occasional luxury; it’s a daily necessity. It is the gentle art of listening to one’s own heart, recognizing your limits, and nurturing your well-being—physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.

Let me take you through a personal journey of how I practice self-care. Perhaps, within these lines, you may find something that resonates with your own path.

My day begins not with the buzz of a phone or the chaos of checking notifications, but with silence and serenity.

I rise early—often before the sun peeks over the horizon—to embrace the stillness of dawn. A cup of warm green tea, a few gentle stretches, and a moment of heartfelt gratitude set the tone for the day ahead.

I light a diya, sit quietly near my small home temple, and offer thanks to the Goddess for blessing me with another day to live, to love, and to create.

Then, I take a few deep, mindful breaths. This simple ritual anchors me.

It’s my way of whispering to the universe,
“I am here. I am grateful. I am ready.”

Self-care starts with respecting the body. I have realized that what we feed ourselves, both in food and thoughts, becomes who we are.

I choose home-cooked meals made with love. Garlic, turmeric, fresh vegetables, and traditional Indian herbs are my allies. I keep my portions balanced and my meals mindful. I chew slowly, often lost in childhood memories of my mother’s kitchen.

Walking is another part of my daily self-care. Whether it’s a walk in the park or a casual stroll around my neighborhood,

it’s my time to connect with nature, breathe deeply, and watch the birds or flowers bloom. I feel alive.

For me, creativity is healing. Painting, writing poetry, or working on my blog, Retired Kalam, is not just a hobby—it’s medicine for the soul.

It allows me to express unspoken emotions, process life’s ups and downs, and rediscover joy in small things.

There are days when words don’t flow or the brush hesitates, but I show up anyway. Showing up for oneself is the purest form of self-care.

We often keep our promises to others, but how often do we keep them for ourselves?

In this hyper-digital age, self-care also means stepping away from screens. I make it a point to take breaks from social media and spend time offline. Evenings are mostly for reading, music, or heartfelt conversations with loved ones.

I remind myself often: Time is a non-renewable resource. How we spend it reflects how much we value ourselves.

One of the most powerful forms of self-care I’ve learned is self-compassion. There was a time in my life when I was my own harshest critic. But now, I speak to myself with kindness and encouragement.

If I make a mistake, I learn and let go. If I feel overwhelmed, I take a break and breathe. Emotional self-care, for me, is also about forgiving myself for the things I didn’t know better in the past.

Self-care is incomplete without tending to the spirit. I find comfort in prayer, meditation, and reading spiritual texts like the Bhagavad Gita or the poetry of Kabir.

Even a walk to the nearby temple or watching the moon rise in silence connects me to something greater than myself. In those moments, I feel held, even if the world around me feels chaotic.

Last but not least, I believe joy is a serious part of self-care. Dancing with my partner to an old Hindi song, sharing laughter with my granddaughter, or enjoying chai with friends—these are sacred moments.

Self-care is not selfish. It is the most generous gift we give to the people around us. A nourished, calm, joyful person radiates peace and love wherever they go.

So, how do I practice self-care? I do it daily. With intention. With love. And with the understanding that a well-cared-for “self” is more capable of caring for others.

Dear reader, I hope you take a moment today to pause, breathe, and ask yourself, “What does my heart need?” You deserve that kindness—from yourself most of all.

Until next time,
Take care of you.

  3. Wow, Vijay Ji!
Your words fall like a gentle rain upon the soil of the soul reviving the parched inner sensitivities with new greenery.

Your writing does not merely instruct; it guides like an experienced seeker, showing the path of self-elevation not through sermons, but through the example of a lived life.

This piece is not just a reflection on “self-care” it is a map of an inward journey, where every milestone brings us closer to the truth of our being. The way you have portrayed self-care not merely as care for body or mind, but as a process of soulful restoration is truly rare.

You have expressed self-care with such sensitivity, insight, and grace it is remarkable. Every paragraph seems to soothe the reader’s inner fatigue and fill them with a renewed energy to live again. Your serene mornings, simplicity in food, creativity in writing, and the power of inner dialogue all come together to reflect a mindful love for life.

Your spiritual discipline in the morning, restraint in eating, the discipline of creativity, digital moderation, inner dialogue, and connection with the Divine all weave together a complete “soul-story.”

At a time when most people have turned life into a race, you are invoking the importance of stillness. And this stillness is not mere rest it is a vow of self-realization.

Your perspective on life shines with the wisdom found in the couplets of Kabir, the verses of the Gita, and the silent prayers of the Sufis.

This self-reflection teaches that “to preserve the self is the first step toward union with the Divine.”

I bow to you for you have turned writing into a spiritual practice.
Your words not only touch the soul but teach the true art of living.

Voices like yours, filled with such sensitivity, are a soothing music in this busy world.

Heartfelt congratulations and deep appreciation for this beautiful reflection. 🌹❣️🙏

    • Dear Srivastava ji,

Your words have moved me deeply—like a sacred breeze that stirs the silence of dawn. 🌿

To be seen in such a light, not just as a writer but as a fellow seeker on this inward path,
is both humbling and uplifting. Your response is not merely appreciation—it is a poetic offering in itself,
flowing with wisdom, grace, and heartfelt resonance.

Yes, in a world that constantly urges us to run faster, I find solace in slowing down—pausing to breathe, reflect, and simply be.
Your beautiful acknowledgment of this stillness as a “vow of self-realization” is profoundly touching and aligns perfectly with what
      I quietly strive for.

If my words have offered even a moment of quiet reflection or inner nourishment, I consider that my true reward.
I am sincerely grateful for your kind presence and thoughtful encouragement—it feels like a blessing.

With heartfelt regards and deep respect,
      —Vijay Verma 🙏🌹✨

  5. This is a fantastic post and a great reminder to practice self-care. I love writing self-care posts on my blog because we humans tend to forget to take care of ourselves and rest.

I love what you said about creative expression, screen use, and spiritual care. Creative expression is key to explore one’s soul and let go of heavy emotions, thoughts, and ideas. Spiritual care is vital to sharpen our character and faith. Spiritual care ultimately leads to a better version of ourselves which will help us to better love others and bring glory back to God.

Screen use is a HUGE issue in this day and age. I’m currently on a journey of balancing screen time. I deleted all social media and had my friend put a limit on my device. It does take our time, creative expression, and our joy away from us.

This was a great read Verma ji!! Thank you so much for sharing.

    • Thank you so much for your thoughtful and heartfelt response! 🌿✨
I truly appreciate your reflections—they beautifully expand on the essence of self-care.

You’re absolutely right: we often neglect our own well-being while trying to keep up with life’s demands. I admire your conscious journey to balance screen time—it takes courage and commitment in today’s digital world. Creative expression and spiritual care, as you mentioned, are powerful tools to reconnect with our inner self and realign with what truly matters.

Your perspective deeply resonates with me, especially the thought that spiritual care helps us love better and live with greater purpose. May your path be filled with peace, clarity, and creative light.

Thank you once again for your kind words and for walking this journey with such awareness. 🙏💛

  6. Learn and let go is something we learn with maturity.

    • Absolutely, so true! 🌿
“Learn and let go” is a quiet wisdom that comes with time, experience, and inner growth.
It’s not always easy, but it frees us from the weight of the past and opens the door to peace and resilience.
With maturity, we realize that not everything needs to be held onto—some things are meant to teach us and then be released. ✨🙏
