# The Oldest Thing I’m Wearing Today

Wearing Memories

Daily writing prompt
What’s the oldest things you’re wearing today?

Hello dear friends,
I hope this blog finds you in a cheerful and reflective mood.

Today’s writing prompt took me by surprise. It asked a simple, almost playful question: “What’s the oldest thing you’re wearing today?”

At first glance, it seemed lighthearted—something you’d answer without a second thought. But as I paused and looked at myself, it became something deeper. I looked down and smiled.

Today, the oldest thing I’m wearing is a faded navy-blue T-shirt. Softened with time, its cuffs slightly frayed, and its label barely legible—it holds over two decades of memories.

It’s not just a piece of fabric; it’s a time capsule. Every time I wear it, I feel wrapped in a strange sense of comfort, as if I’ve slipped into the past.

I still remember vividly—those carefree college days. We had a 40-day educational tour arranged by our college, where about 40 of us students explored various educational institutions.

And had our share of fun across Indian states—Kolkata, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and finally, Punjab.

When we reached the bustling city of Ludhiana, I knew it was famous for its hosiery industry. Eager to shop, I walked into a well-known retail store.

The shop was large and lively. That’s when I spotted the T-shirt—navy-blue, simple, but something about it instantly caught my eye. The price was ₹65.

Now, college students are known to be frugal, and I was no different. I offered ₹60 and began my usual haggling. But the shopkeeper didn’t budge. What followed was unexpected. I spent quite some time at the store.

He offered me lassi, then invited me to join him for lunch. It felt odd—I was just a random customer trying to bargain on a humble T-shirt, and yet, he spent more entertaining me than the cost of the shirt itself.

Curious, I asked him, “You’ve spent more on refreshments than the value of this shirt. What profit are you really making?”

He smiled and replied with words I’ve never forgotten:
“Business is the business of business. That’s our goodwill. Whether it’s a child or a businessman, everyone pays what’s on the tag. That’s our store’s USP.”

I found his logic so intriguing that I kept pondering over it for days. I finally bought the T-shirt—for ₹65—and it became one of my most cherished possessions. I considered it lucky, even a little magical.

For twenty years, I kept it close, even as it aged and tore. I wore it less frequently, then tucked it away with care.

Until one day, while I was away on an official tour, my wife—unaware of its sentimental value—turned it into a floor cloth. When I returned and saw it, I looked at her… then at the cloth… and smiled in silence.

Over the years, I bought newer T-shirts—trendier, softer, more expensive. But none could replace that one. The older it got, the more it reminded me of who I used to be—ambitious, wide-eyed, and still figuring out life.

Isn’t it beautiful how certain clothes hold stories more vividly than any diary?

  • A pair of worn-out shoes that’s seen the Himalayas.
  • A saree passed down through generations.
  • A hat that’s shaded you from many suns.
  • Or a watch that ticks with memories, not just time.

We live in a world obsessed with the new, the next, the shiny. But sometimes, it’s the oldest items—quiet, weathered—that carry the most weight. They’ve been with us through laughter, tears, adventures, and still mornings.

This simple prompt—What’s the oldest thing you’re wearing today?—invites us to pause and reflect. Our closets aren’t just full of clothes, they’re full of characters in the story of our life. They don’t shout for attention but are rich with silent emotion.

Even if they no longer fit us physically, they fit our soul. Like my Tshirt , which has a tiny stain from the day my granddaughter, trying to help, spilled coffee on me while carrying a tray. That little stain is now a cherished memory.

And sometimes, the oldest thing we’re “wearing” isn’t a shirt or scarf. It’s a belief we still carry. A dream we haven’t let go of. A lesson from our parents. Or love—that loyal feeling we’ve nurtured over years.

Today’s question made me grateful. It reminded me that I don’t need something new to feel alive. Sometimes, I just need to acknowledge the things that have always been there—quietly walking beside me.

Today, I’m not just wearing a faded T-shirt.
I’m wearing the laughter of my youth,
The kindness of a stranger,
The taste of Ludhiana’s lassi,
And a lesson in business I never forgot.

So, dear readers, I encourage you—look into your wardrobe. Find that old piece and ask yourself: What memory is stitched into this?

You’ll discover it’s not just about clothes—it’s about life.
