Change One Law, What Would It Be, and Why?

Daily writing prompt
If you had the power to change one law, what would it be and why?

My dear friends,

I hope this Blog finds you in a cheerful mood. Laws are the backbone of a civilized society, ensuring justice, fairness, and order. They guide us in our daily lives and provide a framework for governance.

However, not all laws are perfect. Some become outdated, unjust, or impractical over time.

If I had the power to change one law, I would focus on abolishing or reforming the law that criminalizes homelessness, ensuring that every individual has the right to shelter and basic human dignity.

Many countries, including some of the world’s most developed nations, have laws that criminalize sleeping in public places, loitering, or setting up temporary shelters.

These laws fail to address the root cause of homelessness and instead punish those who are already vulnerable.

Instead of providing assistance, these legal frameworks push homeless individuals into a cycle of fines, arrests, and further marginalization. This approach does not solve the problem; it merely hides it from the privileged sections of society.

  1. Human Rights Perspective:
Homelessness is not a crime; it is often a result of economic disparity, unemployment, mental health struggles, or unforeseen personal crises. Criminalizing it violates fundamental human rights, including the right to life and dignity.
  2. Ineffective and Costly:
Arresting and fining homeless individuals does not reduce homelessness; it exacerbates the issue.

Instead of investing in policing and punitive measures, governments should allocate funds to shelters, rehabilitation programs, and affordable housing initiatives.
  3. Moral Responsibility of Society:
A society should be judged by how it treats its most vulnerable members. By reforming laws that punish homelessness and instead implementing support systems, we acknowledge our moral duty to care for each other.
  4. Economic Benefits:
Studies have shown that providing permanent housing solutions is often cheaper than maintaining punitive measures.

The cost of emergency medical care, law enforcement interventions, and incarceration far outweighs the expenses associated with social housing programs.

Instead of criminalization, the law should focus on solutions:

  • Affordable Housing Projects:
Governments should work towards building low-cost housing options with rental assistance programs.
  • Employment and Skill Development:
Providing job training programs for homeless individuals can help them reintegrate into society.
  • Mental Health and Addiction Support:
Many homeless people struggle with mental health issues and substance abuse. Allocating resources for counseling and rehabilitation can be a step towards long-term solutions.
  • Community Engagement Programs:
Encouraging citizens to participate in local programs to help the homeless can create a more compassionate society.

I believe in a world where no one is left behind due to circumstances beyond their control. Homelessness can happen to anyone—a financial crisis, medical emergency, or natural disaster can turn a stable life upside down.

Instead of punishing people for their misfortune, laws should empower them to rebuild their lives. Changing such a law would not only be an act of justice but also a step toward a kinder, more equitable world.

Yes, If I had the power to change one law, it would be to abolish the criminalization of homelessness and replace it with policies that provide real solutions.

We must move beyond treating symptoms and address the root causes of homelessness with empathy and efficiency. Laws should exist to uplift people, not push them further into despair.

By advocating for such a change, we take a step toward a society that values compassion over punishment, solutions over avoidance, and dignity over discrimination.

After all, a law is only just if it serves the people fairly. And in the end, isn’t that what laws are meant to do?

BE HAPPY….BE ACTIVE….BE FOCUSED….BE ALIVE…
