Rediscovering Passions: Table Tennis Members in Silver Oak

Dear Friends,

I hope this blog finds you in a cheerful mood. Today’s writing prompt, “What new things happened in 2024?”, sparked a fond memory of an exciting chapter in my life.

It’s a story of how a forgotten table tennis board and a spark of passion transformed into something truly magical in Silver Oak Society, my residential community.

Three years ago, my family and I shifted to Silver Oak Society, a vibrant and lively community that quickly became our home.

From the moment I stepped in, I knew this place was special. Silver Oak Society offered everything one could wish for, especially for someone like me, retired yet young at heart.

I fell in love with this society for three reasons:

  1. The Sports Culture:
Residents here are passionate about sports. They organize an annual cricket tournament following the IPL format, creating a festive and competitive spirit.
  2. Facilities for Retirees:
The senior citizens’ group meets every morning for light exercises, engaging conversations, and hearty laughter in the central park. These gatherings keep us physically fit and mentally cheerful.
  3. Amenities Galore: From a well-equipped gym to a swimming pool, Silver Oak Society is a haven for fitness enthusiasts.

I was thrilled to be part of this positive and lively environment.

One day, while exploring the clubhouse after my gym session, I stumbled upon a dusty table tennis board tucked in the corner. It was clear no one had played on it for quite some time.

However, that sight stirred something deep within me—a dormant passion from my college days.

Back then, table tennis was my favorite game. I spent countless hours perfecting my shots, enjoying the thrill of every match. That dusty board seemed like an invitation to relive those golden days.

Without wasting time, I purchased four rackets and balls and decided to bring table tennis back to life. I began playing solo, brushing off the rust.

Soon, curious children from the society gathered around, intrigued by the game. I invited them to join, and their laughter and excitement brought the clubhouse to life.

Slowly but surely, others joined, and the once-neglected TT board became a hub of energy and joy.

Just as the TT sessions became a daily highlight, life threw me a curveball—I was transferred to Siliguri. My heart sank at the thought of leaving behind the newfound passion and the connections I had built.

However, life has a way of surprising us. Upon reaching Siliguri, I discovered that my new society also had a clubhouse with a TT board! It felt like destiny.

I resumed playing, encouraging a new group of kids to join me. Meanwhile, the children back in Silver Oak Society would often call, asking when I’d return. Their enthusiasm kept my spirits high.

After a year in Siliguri, I was fortunate to return to the Silver Oak Society. The warm welcome from my friends and TT companions was heartwarming.

We immediately revived our sessions, and this time, the group grew larger with new faces joining in.

One day, while playing, I suggested organizing a table tennis tournament. The idea was met with unanimous excitement, and we wasted no time in planning.

Determined to make it happen, we launched sponsorship and donation drives.

My heartfelt gratitude goes to my friends Rakesh Chaudhary, Avinash Kishan, and Noddy, whose dedication turned this dream into reality. With everyone’s support, we raised enough funds to proceed.

Teams were formed, each with a unique name:

  1. Backspin Pandits : Avro, Vaibhav A, Siddharth, Sumit, Sunil
  2. Chop Chams : Avinash, Reyansh, Vishnu, Adarsh, Lerish
  3. Rally Royals : Rakesh, Rishi, Vaibhav S, Shubhranil, Amit S
  4. Table Turners : Deepak, Aadit, Hrishikesh, Akash, Rakesh A
  5. Smash Stars : Aaryan, Ayushman, Kamlesh, Vedant, Antriksh
  6. Net Ninja (my team) : Vijay, Divyansh, Arun S, Praveen, Gaurav P

Our team was a delightful mix of age and experience, ranging from a 12-year-old prodigy to a 66-year-old enthusiast—yes, that’s me! 😊
Our motto, “Focus, finesse, and friendship,” perfectly encapsulated our spirit.

We practiced relentlessly, honing our skills and building camaraderie. The tournament wasn’t just about competition; it was about community, joy, and the love for sports.

The day of the tournament arrived, and the clubhouse buzzed with energy. Vibrant banners adorned the walls, cheering squads filled the room, and the atmosphere was electric.

The matches were intense, with every rally keeping the audience on edge. Players of all ages gave their best, and the spirit of sportsmanship shone brightly.

Net Ninja fought valiantly through the rounds. Every match taught us something new, and each victory brought us closer together.

Despite our best efforts, we narrowly missed winning the championship title. We lose in the Final.
But as they say, “In sports, you either win or you learn.” The journey was filled with lessons, moments of joy, and a renewed passion for the game.
Yes, the memories we created were far more rewarding.

The tournament left an indelible mark on our community. The once-forgotten TT board became a symbol of unity and enthusiasm.

New players continued to join, and table tennis became a regular feature in our society.

For me, it was more than just a game. It was a journey of rediscovering my passion, building connections, and proving that age is just a number when it comes to pursuing your dreams.

As I reflect on this incredible journey, I am filled with gratitude. 2024 will always be the year that reminded me of the power of community, perseverance, and living in the moment.

So, if you ever stumble upon a dusty board, an old hobby, or a forgotten passion, take a chance on it. You never know—it might lead you to an unforgettable adventure.
