Hello, my friends,

The writing prompt today reminded me of some cherished memories. Throughout our lives, we often participate in many acts that can be considered acts of kindness. However, there are certain good deeds that bring us immense satisfaction when we reflect on them.

Today, I’d like to share one such incident with you.

I had just taken over at the Ashok Rajpath branch in Patna and was under significant pressure to meet the bank deposit target. One of my staff suggested that we approach the electricity department as they often have substantial funds.

Although we didn’t have any connections in that department, my intuition told me to give it a shot, so I went to the Bihar Electricity office on Bailey Road alone. After waiting for a while, I got the chance to send my visiting card to the head of the department.

Shortly after, I was called in. I carefully read the name on the plaque outside the office to ensure I addressed him correctly: Mr. Sampat Bhowmik.

He asked me to sit and inquired about the purpose of my visit. I introduced myself briefly and requested a deposit. To my surprise, he called his secretary right in front of me and inquired about the available funds. The secretary mentioned they had ten crores, and Mr. Bhowmik immediately instructed him to deposit the amount in our branch the next day.

I couldn’t believe how easily I secured the deposit, especially since our bank didn’t even have an account with them before the meeting. As I sat there, sipping tea and reflecting on the turn of events, Mr. Bhowmik’s voice broke my reverie. He smiled and said, “You might be wondering why I am helping a stranger.”

Yes, I am that student

He then revealed, “When I saw your business card, I recognized you immediately. Fifteen years ago, you personally helped a student with a financial need for engineering admission. I am that student. Yes, I am the son of Sumit Bhowmik, the one you helped with ₹50,000 from your own account. Because of your help, I became an engineer today.”

Hearing Sumit Bhowmik’s name brought back a flood of memories. Back then, I was the branch manager at the H.B. branch in Kolkata.

One day, while I was engrossed in a loan proposal, a man named Sumit Bhowmik entered my chamber. He stood silently before me, with an unkempt beard, disheveled hair, and sweat-soaked clothes due to the summer heat. He seemed deeply troubled and probably hadn’t slept well for days.

After greeting me, he said he urgently needed ₹50,000 for his son’s engineering college admission at JIS Engineering College, Kalyani, and showed me the relevant documents.

He had committed Fraud

I was surprised when he approached me, considering he had many colleagues at the bank. All I knew about him was that he was a cashier who had been suspended for fraud.

A year earlier, news of his fraudulent activities had spread rapidly. Investigations showed that he had committed fraud to pay for his mother’s medical treatment. Despite his crime, I couldn’t help but feel sympathetic towards him.

Lost in thought, I was brought back to reality when he repeated his request. He explained that it was the last date for his son’s admission, and if he missed it, his son’s future would be ruined.

I had no option but to break my fixed deposit to help him. Two conclusions came to mind: he had no choice but to commit fraud due to his mother’s illness, and if he committed a crime, why should his son suffer? I promptly gave him the money from my fixed deposit.

He thanked me and left the branch in a hurry, probably to catch a local train to Kalyani. Meanwhile, Dulal Da, a staff member and our well-wisher, found out about the incident and advised me against giving him the money, saying that Sumit wouldn’t be able to repay it.

When I told him that Sumit had already left with the money, Dulal Da was distraught and said I should have consulted them to avoid losing my money.

But the truth was, I felt a sense of satisfaction and joy in helping a student in need. I recalled my own struggles during my education and felt the pain he was going through. I thanked God for making me capable of helping someone in their studies.

One day, Sumit came with ₹3,000

Days passed, and I forgot about the loan to Sumit. Then, one day, Sumit returned with ₹3,000, promising to repay the loan in installments. Hearing his story, I felt a mix of surprise and sorrow.

After being dismissed from the bank, his financial condition worsened, and even his friends and relatives turned their backs on him. He met a childhood friend who offered him a job at a factory in Dhanbad. With hard work, his salary increased, and he could manage his household expenses while repaying my loan.

Sumit said, “You were like God to me at that moment when you helped me financially, allowing my son to get into college. I firmly believe that my son will become an engineer and that our troubles will end.”

Filled with Immense Joy to hear that

Seeing his son as a successful person today fills me with immense joy. My faith in God has strengthened even more. My heart says,

“How can I doubt my Lord’s decisions? If He is giving me punishment, there must have been some sin I committed…”

This story beautifully justifies the concept of “random acts of kindness.” You never know how your small act of kindness can have a profound impact on someone’s life.

Sometimes, these acts come full circle, reminding us of the goodness in the world and reinforcing our belief in the divine plans that guide our lives.
