#In the World’s Market#

The poem describes the man’s downfall in a way that is both humorous and sad. It shows how easy it is to get caught up in the world’s materialism and lose sight of what is truly important.

The man’s loneliness and bitterness at the end of the poem are a powerful reminder of the dangers of buying into the wrong things.

In the World’s Market

Once upon a time, a man set out,

To the world’s market, with a shopping thought

He wandered through the shops, with glee,

Buying all the things he wanted to be.

At the first shop, he bought Envy’s wares,

Thinking that it would make him shine.

He thought, “If I am richer and more grand,

People will envy me, and I’ll be in command.

At the next shop, he bought Anger’s rage,

Thinking that it would make him feared.

He thought, “If I can make people cower,

They’ll do whatever I desire.”

At the last shop, he bought Hatred’s spite,

Thinking that it would make him strong.

He thought, “If I can make people hate me,

They’ll stay away, and I’ll be all alone.”

The man got what he paid for, in full measure.

He became a lonely, bitter soul.

He had bought all the wrong things,

And now he had to pay the toll.

Oh, heed this warning, all who hear,

The world’s market is a dangerous game.

Buy wisely, with your heart and mind,

Or you’ll end up with nothing but pain.
